(A book on folk songs)

Researching the folks songs of the community of Zsámbok located along River Galga already began in the thirties, and this work has been ongoing since then in the past almost ninety years with the help of several collaborators. The volume on Zsámbok is the 5th volume of the serial publication that introduces the preservation of culture and cultural heritage in the region along River Galga, and it introduces its readers to the research activities of Sándor Tímár, György Martin, Mrs. Béla Györe, István Alföldy-Boruss, as well as József Terék, which activities, based upon compilation of the local tunes and melodies carried out from a scientific aspect in the past nearly 50 years, resulted in recording and otherwise documenting 47 folk games and 104 folk songs, whose revision and transcription was done by Dr. Katalin Lázár, senior research fellow at MTA BTK Institute of Musicology.

The book was published in 2019 by the Municipality of Zsámbok.

(A book on folk songs and folk costumes)

In 2018 was the year of publication of the volume titled ‘Folk Songs of Hévízgyörk’, which summarizes the folk songs originating from Hévízgyörk that are specifically valuable from a scientific aspect. The book contains the versions and variations, in times of past and present, of each and every folk song, whose original audio recordings are published on the attached DVD-ROM of this present publication. Altogether, the attachment contains 446 audio files by the help of which all local folk songs can be learnt more easily and in style. The attachment comes with a 31-page photo gallery booklet, in which the local folklore groups and their members are introduced and showing the wide variety of Hévízgyörk folk costumes they wear on a daily basis or on festive occasions and performances. The book is the 3rd stage of the cultural heritage and value protection work in the Galga region, and this publication also fills the gap, and was published in 2019 by the Women’s Choir of Hévízgyörk Folk Art Association.

(A book on traditional folk costumes)

The completion and publication of the book titled ’The Traditional Folk Costumes of Hévízgyörk’ was the 6th stage of the cultural heritage and value protection work in the Galga region. Again, this publication fills the gap, and it presents the traditional folk costume values of the settlement from the early 20^th century until the seventies by showing 245 archived photographs. From the descriptions, one can learn about the differences in folk costumes due to the generation gaps, the alternations in colors, the hairstyles, as well as female and male clothing from cradle to grave. Hévízgyörk is still a genuine “village with living folk traditions”, where the customs are still parts of the daily routine, and today there are still more than 200 local women are habitually dressed in the original folk costumes of Hévízgyörk. The rich and varied photographic documents can give one a glimpse into the period folk costumes of Hévízgyörk.

The publication introduces its readers the 50 years of work and accomplishment since the establishment of the Women’s Choir of Hévízgyörk, and is the 4th volume of the serial publication that introduces the preservation of culture and cultural heritage in the region along River Galga. From the book, its readers can learn about the history of the women’s choir established in 1969, their national and international achievements, their performances, the atmosphere of their radio recordings, its leaders, members, and their activities in the past half a century carried out with extreme humility, by which they provided scientific researches great assistance countless times. The photographic evidence in the publication help the readers gain better knowledge as regards the love for the homeland, and the course of life the Women’s Choir of Hévízgyörk have covered in the past half a century.

(Folk songs and folk games from Tápiószele)

In the Pest County village of Tápiószele located along River Tápió, a scientific research work to identify, notate and document the local folk song values commenced in 1906 with Béla Bartók’s collection works. Due to his efforts, 35 local melodies were recorded and notated; his activities were later continued by a former landowner, István Viczián in 1945, and later in 1954 by Mária Schnöller, and by ethnographer Margit Luby in 1956. Of the group members of MTA Department for Folk Music and Folk Dance Research, Géza Paulovics researched the local folk songs in 1964 and 1967, which activities were later followed by László Hintalan’s book titled “Tápió mente néprajza” (Etnography along River Tápió) published in 1981 summarizing the local folk games. József Terék concluded his research work with the last remaining informants between 2009 and 2019. The summary of the abovementioned materials is presented in this volume, which also serves as an auxiliary teaching material to strengthen local identity, and to intentionally pass the local folk games and folk songs from generation to generation. This publication is the second joint collaboration between MTA BTK Institute of Musicology and Pest County Council summarizing the locally relevant research findings as regards folk games, old style melodies, new style melodies, instrumental collections, and folks songs resembling art songs.

(Folk customs, folk songs)

The book summarizes the folk customs and folk song values of the village of Gomba, Pest County. A local resident of this village along River Tápió, Mr. Dezső Varga summarizes those local customs and traditions closely related to human life, crop years, and religious festivals, respectively. Childbirths, weddings, deaths, carnivals, harvest parades, corn hullings, plucking of down, pig slaughters, Advent, Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost, local use of language (regional dialect), bridesman’s rhymes, and many other interesting topic subjects valuable from ethnographic and local history perspectives are further elaborated and explained. In addition to introducing life in the country, the examination of local folk song values researched and summarized by József Terék is of significant importance, the first cultural value of which is the folk song collection activities of Zoltán Kodály carried out between 1903 and 1905. This volume is the 4th stage of the project “Gombai históriák” (Stories from Gomba), a series planned for six volumes.

Hévízgyörk located along River Galga is a unique settlement in Pest County still maintaining its lively tradition of folk art values; and it is here where over a hundred local women dressed in traditional folk dresses keep singing their local folk songs, and carry on their folk customs every day. The book summarizes the findings of the scientific research conducted here in the past 60 years, which findings make up a compilation of local folk songs selected from the professional and scientific systematization of over 1,000 sound recordings, and approximately 600 tunes and melodies. The 215 tunes and melodies in the publication introduce those typical old style and new style folk songs, together with their variations, which are the most original values in Hévízgyörk – all from “the purest source.” The volume, supplemented with traditional folk games, was produced with the cooperation of 110 singers from Hévízgyörk, who are mostly contemporary singers and, to a smaller proportion, singers of the past whose memories are kept in audio recordings of earlier researches, and in the memories of the local populace. This publication is the very first joint collaboration between MTA BTK Institute of Musicology and Pest County Council aimed at reintroducing and re-teaching local values to the younger generations, strengthening local identity, and popularizing folk songs values both domestically and internationally.

The 13th stage of the project to protect the cultural heritage and values of the Tápió region was the publication of the book ‘A Tápió mente zenekarai a XX. században’. This publication fills a gap by introducing the folk music bands, gypsy bands and brass bands found in the 21 villages for further studies. On 350 photographs there are over 600 musicians portrayed in the book broken down by village. A region rich in musical history is introduced where all musicians portrayed, be they in large brass bands or in gypsy bands performing in fancy uniforms, have been recognized and identified by the elders of the villages who still remember the unparalleled band history of the region. In most cases, these musicians were from the locality, and played music after work for fun, but many of them at a professional level. All these memories are now almost gone, but with the help of this book the past begins anew for all, and in this past the bands of the Tápió region take their rightful place in the 20th century.

The 10th stage of the project to protect the cultural heritage and values of the Tápió region was the publication of the folk song book ’100 év 1000 népdal a Tápió mentén’. No previous useful and academic publications have existed to summarize the folk songs from the 21 settlements in the Tápió region. Zoltán Kodály, Béla Bartók, Jenő Ádám, Mária Schöller, Antal Békefi, György Kerényi, Bálint Sárosi, György Martin, Katalin Lázár, János Manga, József Terék and many others researched this unmatched treasure trove of folk songs of this region. The collection and compilation of songs performed by 360 participants have finally been carried out, in 110 years, with the publication of this book and its DVD-ROM attachment as a learning tool. Upon its publication, learning our folk songs has now become available for anyone. Dr. Katalin Lázár, a research fellow at MTA BTK Institute for Musicology and, at the same time, the last scientific researcher of the region in 1981, revised the publication. Nursery rhymes, children songs, games, commemorative and work songs, other songs not connected to any occasion, folk songs of minorities, instrumentals notations can all be found in the 866-song publication – frequently the same melodies are repeated but with small variations in harmony depending on the location (different villages, different melodies). As a result of the collection and compilation project, approximately 1,250 folk songs are now included in the database under the heading ‘Tápió folk song.’ The publication was released in the last hour, when participants – singers and musicians alike – were still to be found, thus by their help the publication became more authentic.

The 15th stage of the project to protect the cultural heritage and values of the Tápió region was the publication of the book ‘A Tápió mente népviselete I’. Again, this publication fills a gap, as there have been no other publications, apart from the monograph ‘A Tápió mente néprajza I-II.’ published in 1985, which compiled and presented the local folk costumes broken down by settlement. The folk costumes of the villages of Mende, Sülysáp (previously two villages, Tápiósáp and Tápiósüly), Tápióság, Tápiószecső, and Úri are still to be found and have not been forgotten despite the rise of urbanization and the proximity of the capital, Budapest. With the help of 475 photographs, the folk costumes worn in certain eras, during certain festivals or on special occasions are presented in the most accurate details categorized by sex and village from the early 20th century to present. When turning the pages of this book, not only do we learn whether or not the Tápió region had its own set of folk costumes, we can also establish the distinct folk costume varieties among certain villages regarding the frequency of the clothes worn, their cutting, their length and many other aspects. As a continuation of the book, the folk costumes of other 16 villages will also be presented – studying and researching them, however, is rather time consuming.

By publishing this book, local folk costumes can now be interpreted and explored by anyone, thus local folk dance groups have the opportunity to stage our dances and sing our folk songs while properly dressed in folk costumes; the book has become the literature to the appropriate background to properly stage performances.
